The Hunter Games: part five

So here we are at the final installment of The Hunter Games 2014 (not to say that we won’t be going again this year!). This has been such a great trip – a much needed relaxing break from the city fast lane. I’m very sad to leave!

We spent Friday morning running round a lot of the vineyards we’d visited to pick up the wine we’d liked the best.  We chose a few special bottles, such as Thomas Allen’s The Doctor and Alastair and a few boxes of clean skins – plus a fine bottle of gin from The Hunter Distillery. Watch this space for Dan’s review of the different bottles we bought! (30 to be exact….)

On the way back through Cessnock, before hitting the highway, we stopped by the Royal Oak pub for lunch in its 221 Restaurant. This place had been recommended to us by the couple next door to us at yesterday’s lunch.  We were intrigued at the prospect of a rough and ready Aussie pub that actually served fine food.  We went through to the restaurant and I chose a gourmet pizza with Italian sausage, marinated fennel, zucchini, grilled chicken and feta (and mozzarella), while Dan went for the lime and coriander marinated free range chicken breast with baby choy, shiitake mushrooms and soy sesame sauce.

The food was a little slow to come out but it was really nice. My pizza was huge and loaded with topping. Dan’s chicken dish was presented really well – it is certainly better quality than you may expect from driving past the outside of this pub and we really enjoyed it.  Then it was Sydney-bound and back to reality – at least we still had the weekend ahead!
